Finnish sauna - Reimagined

Tradition does not have to disappear for something new to arrive. Gas sauna heating is becoming a serious alternative alongside wood and electricity — not replacing them, but expanding what a sauna can be.

CE Marking & EU Type Examination Tested to European Standards FinSteam gas sauna heaters are CE-marked in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/426 on appliances burning gaseous fuels (Gas Appliances Regulation, GAR). The CE marking confirms that the heater has undergone the required conformity assessment process and meets the applicable European requirements for gas appliances. An important part of this process is the EU Type Examination.

FinSteam has been assessed by the notified certification body AENOR CONFÍA S.A.U., which has issued EU Type Examination Certificate No. A01/002220. The certification covers the heater as a complete system — including its construction, combustion system, materials, safety devices and specified operating conditions.
The technical assessment is based on the requirements of the Gas Appliances Regulation and the applicable European standard EN 449:2002+A1:2007. Independent laboratory testing has also formed part of the certification process for FinSteam’s 8.1 kW BOTNIA and AURORA gas sauna heaters. An important part of this process is the EU Type Examination.

CE marking is not simply a label on the heater. It represents the testing, engineering and documented conformity behind the entire product. FinSteam is the only CE-marked electricity-free gas sauna heater on the market.

How Does a Sauna Really Heat Up? Natural Convection – Hot Air Rises A sauna heats up through the transfer of thermal energy from the heater to the air, stones, surrounding surfaces and, ultimately, the people inside. This happens through three fundamental heat-transfer mechanisms: convection, conduction and thermal radiation. These mechanisms work simultaneously, but the way a heater uses and combines them determines how quickly the sauna warms up, how evenly the heat is distributed and how the warmth is experienced.

This applies to all sauna heaters, whether wood-burning, electric or gas. But FinSteam has one major difference in the way it uses and distributes heat: Direct Thermal Flow™.
Unlike traditional sauna heaters, which heat the sauna indirectly, FinSteam adds direct heating alongside natural convection, conduction and thermal radiation.FinSteam is a flueless gas sauna heater. The hot combustion gases produced by the gas-burning process — carbon dioxide and water vapor — are released directly into the sauna, allowing all of their thermal energy to contribute directly to heating the sauna instead of being lost through a chimney. This is the foundation of FinSteam Direct Thermal Flow™ technology. With traditional sauna heaters, natural convection is one of the main ways the sauna air is heated.
As the heater heats up, the air around it becomes warmer and lighter, causing it to rise. At the same time, cooler air flows toward the heater, where it warms up and rises in turn. This creates a continuous, natural circulation of air known as natural convection. No fans or mechanical systems are needed – the airflow is driven naturally by differences in temperature.
Conduction – Heat Through Contact In conduction, heat transfers directly within a material or between materials in contact. In a sauna heater, heat moves from the heat source into the metal structures and from there into the sauna stones, gradually heating them from the surface toward the core. Conduction therefore plays an important role inside the heater and in heating the sauna stones. Thermal Radiation – Heat You Can Feel A hot sauna heater and sauna stones also emit thermal radiation, or infrared radiation.Unlike convection or conduction, thermal radiation requires no airflow or direct contact. It transfers heat directly from the hot surfaces to surrounding objects and people. The hotter the surface of the heater and stones, the stronger the thermal radiation. The combustion of LPG naturally produces water vapor. In FinSteam, this water vapor is released into the sauna air throughout the entire time the heater is operating, creating a continuous natural source of humidity.Humidity Balance™ does not replace traditional löyly. Water is still thrown onto the hot sauna stones, just as it should be in a Finnish sauna. However, the water vapor produced during combustion creates a naturally and consistently more humid baseline environment, even before you have thrown a single drop of water onto the stones. How Is FinSteam Different from Traditional Sauna Heaters? Humidity Balance™ Direct Thermal Flow™ Sauna Climate Engineering™ Sauna Climate Engineering™ is not a technical control system or an electronic feature. It describes how the FinSteam gas sauna heater, natural ventilation and the sauna itself work together as one thermal system. Download FinSteam Technology Guide

ODS Safety Technology FinSteam's Patented Gas Heater Technology The ODS system continuously monitors combustion conditions through a specially designed pilot burner, thermocouple and gas safety valve. If the oxygen level in the surrounding air drops too low, the pilot flame changes and can no longer heat the thermocouple correctly. The thermocouple then cools, causing the gas safety valve to close automatically and shut off the gas supply.

The system works entirely without electricity, electronic sensors or external power.
ODS is part of FinSteam’s patented gas sauna heater technology and is included in the safety configuration assessed under FinSteam’s EU Type Examination Certificate No. A01/002220, issued by AENOR under the EU Gas Appliances Regulation (EU) 2016/426. The technical assessment is based on the requirements of the Gas Appliances Regulation and the applicable European standard EN 449:2002+A1:2007. FinSteam gas sauna heaters use ODS (Oxygen Depletion Safety) technology as an integral part of their combustion safety system. ODS provides an additional safety layer, but it does not replace the requirement for correctly designed combustion air and sauna ventilation.
